Evaluation

We were told that we would be working in groups to create an advert advertising a unilever product, we had to present a pitch about our chosen product and present our ideas to the class. This pitch involved rebranding a product and present our ideas to the class. When put into my group we decided to make an advert for the hair product VO5, we decided to choose VO5 as the advert idea was practical for the time we were given to make the advert. VO5 main target audience is both men and women in their early 20’s – early 30’s, we decided to change the target audience to girls ages 16-30.

We sent out a questionnaire with questions related to our
advert as well as our actual advert to our target audience to see if this product would appeal to them. The majority of people we sent it to said it made the product appeal to them and they related to the main character because of their age. I feel we got the main message across to our target audience and felt the advert had an appropriate impact on our target audience.

Throughout we used close up shots to show the emotions of the main characters face, this will allow the audience to feel sympathy and empathy for the main character when needed and also to see the confidence after using the product. We used two different soundtracks throughout, the first was used before the main character used the hair product, this was a sad, slow paced song as the main character was unconfident and upset that she failed her audition. The second was an upbeat, happy song to show to show the change of confidence in the main character due to the use of the product. The mise-en-scene is telling a story of a girl who has an audition but fails as she is unconfident, however she uses VO5 product to make her hair lifted and livelier, this gives her confidents to try out again and succeed. We edited the scenes together quickly to get the story across quickly as adverts have to be quick in getting the point, we also added a pause at the end and added text and a few photos to advertise the product more.

I feel that our advert effectively sells the product to the
specific audience though its story, I feel it does this by having the main character being the target audience as well as putting in a real life struggle for teenage and young adults such as overcoming confidence issues. By creating a narrative that not only advertises the product but also can relate to the target audience I feel that the target audience will pay more attention to the advert and take more of an interest in the product. We wanted to advertise the product mainly for teenage and young adult females as the media shows them to have more confident issues and that something as small as changing their hair can make them feel more confident in themselves, we also advertised for females as hair putty is seen as more of a male hair product but we wanted to show to show that it can be used by females as well.

I personally feel that overall that our advert fit its purpose of advertising a VO5 product however I feel that it could have looked more professional but it does comply with advertising regulations. The BCAP code states the when advertising a product the advert must not mislead the consumer, as well as not use words such as “guarantee” in a way that could confuses the consumer.

My final advertisement was very similar to my original intentions, we tried to match our advert scene to scene with our storyboards, which I felt we did really well as well as sticking to our production schedule so we would get the advert done in time. After sending our advert out to our target audience and getting positive feedback we felt we succeeded with our original intentions.

Overall I am quite satisfied with our final product however if I were to do this project again I would use a different location and also I would change the music as I don’t feel the transaction between he music went smoothly enough. I feel like I did an equal part to everyone else although I didn’t get he chance to use the camera while filming as I was mainly in it.
